The okapi, often called the “forest giraffe,” remains one of the most mysterious animals in the world. Native to the dense rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the species is believed by many locals to still roam freely in Maiko National Park and Lomami National Park. These protected areas provide the kind of secluded, lush environment the shy okapi needs to survive in the wild.

While sightings in Congo remain rare, visitors to the United States can admire this remarkable animal up close at the Saint Louis Zoo. Recently, Gael and friends visited the zoo and witnessed okapi thriving in a carefully maintained micro-habitat, designed to mimic their natural forest home. This experience offers a rare opportunity to connect with a species that symbolizes both Congo’s natural heritage and the importance of global conservation.

The okapi’s presence—both in Congo’s wild parks and in international zoos—serves as a reminder of the need to protect endangered species and preserve the delicate ecosystems they call home.
